The United States launched its war against Iran without consulting key allies, including India, a decision that “made a mess of the world” and hurt Washington’s credibility, Indian-origin Congressman Ro Khanna said on Tuesday as he launched a scathing attack on President Donald Trump’s foreign policy.
Speaking at the IX USISPF Leadership Summit 2026 in Washington DC, Khanna said the Trump administration had chosen to wage a unilateral conflict despite its far-reaching consequences for partners across the world.
“The idea that we engaged in a unilateral war without our allies, without even consulting Europe or Canada or India, and made a mess of the world has hurt our credibility,” Khanna said.
He argued that the fallout from the conflict extended well beyond the battlefield, saying the war had been “utterly destructive” for India by pushing up energy prices and compounding the economic burden created by the Trump administration’s tariff policies.
“The US-India relationship has been at the lowest point in the last 30 years. Trump’s policies of getting into a war in Iran have been utterly destructive. It has been utterly destructive to the prices in India of gas… and then the irrationality of the tariff war,” he said.

Khanna’s remarks come months after New Delhi repeatedly urged restraint as tensions in West Asia escalated following the US-led military campaign against Iran.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held separate conversations with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and President Trump during the crisis, stressing the need for dialogue, regional stability and uninterrupted maritime commerce through the Strait of Hormuz — a critical energy artery that carries a significant share of India’s crude oil imports. Modi also publicly welcomed the subsequent US-Iran understanding, saying it would help restore peace, stability and freedom of navigation.
As fears mounted over prolonged disruption in the Strait of Hormuz — through which nearly 40 per cent of India’s crude oil imports transit — international crude prices surged sharply, forcing the Centre to introduce temporary restrictions on the sale and distribution of petrol and diesel, raise export duties on some petroleum products and urge citizens to conserve fuel.
Long queues were reported at fuel stations in several cities amid panic buying, while oil marketing companies came under pressure from volatile global prices and supply disruptions.
Only this week did the government begin unwinding those emergency measures after the easing of tensions and progress towards a US-Iran understanding, lifting temporary curbs on the sale and distribution of petrol and diesel imposed during the height of the crisis.
The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz has since helped cool crude prices, offering relief to consumers and refiners.
