The United States Mint has commenced production on a newly designed 1-dollar coin featuring the face of President Donald Trump. The commemorative release is timed to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent unveiled the project, stating that the coin celebrates the nation’s “enduring legacy of liberty and a lasting symbol of patriotism.” Produced at the Philadelphia Mint, the coins are scheduled to become available to the public in the autumn.

The front of the coin displays a stern-faced profile of the President dressed in a suit and tie. The text is framed by standard American currency inscriptions:
- Top Arc: The word “LIBERTY” spans the upper boundary.
- Centre: The traditional motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” sits alongside the portrait.
- Bottom Arc: The historical timeline “1776–2026″ commemorates the milestone anniversary.
The reverse side portrays the traditional bald eagle from the Great Seal of the United States, bearing the phrase E Pluribus Unum.
Despite its gold-coloured appearance, the Treasury Department confirmed that the coin contains no actual gold. It is instead struck from a manganese-brass alloy, giving it a bright, golden-hued finish. The coins are intended for collectors and will be sold in bags and rolls rather than entering general circulation.
Earlier iterations of the design had featured more combative imagery, including a draft showing the President raising a clenched fist alongside the slogan “Fight Fight Fight”—a direct nod to the 2024 assassination attempt in Pennsylvania. That version was ultimately revised.
Legality and Precedent

An 1866 federal statute explicitly prohibits living individuals from appearing on paper banknotes. Furthermore, the Presidential 1-Dollar Coin Act of 2005 stipulates that only deceased former leaders can be featured on circulating dollar coins.
Treasury lawyers bypassed these hurdles by leveraging a bipartisan 2020 law tied specifically to the nation’s upcoming semiquincentennial celebrations. This statute grants the Treasury Secretary broad authority to issue commemorative coins with unique designs.
To justify the move, Treasury officials pointed to historical precedent. In 1926, the US Mint struck a commemorative half-dollar coin featuring then-President Calvin Coolidge to celebrate the 150th anniversary of American independence, validating the inclusion of a living leader on celebratory issues.
The commemorative $1 coin featuring Donald Trump is intended as a collector’s item and not for general circulation, thus it will not become legal tender for everyday use.
