The National Medical Commission (NMC) has revised the MBBS seat matrix for the 2026-27 academic year, taking the total undergraduate medical seat capacity to 1,40,214 seats across 836 medical colleges.
According to the updated matrix, 1,27,028 seats have been renewed, while 13,186 seats have been increased. The revised figures are important for candidates participating in the NEET UG 2026 counselling process, as the NMC-approved intake determines the seats available for admission.
Government medical colleges have added 2,786 MBBS seats, taking their total capacity to 63,971 seats across 445 institutions. While private medical colleges, meanwhile, have added 10,400 seats, taking their total intake to 76,243 seats across 391 colleges. Private institutions therefore account for nearly 79% of the 13,186 increased seats, while government colleges account for around 21%.
The revised matrix follows an earlier NMC seat matrix that listed 1,36,939 MBBS seats across 823 medical colleges for 2026-27. The latest total of 1,40,214 represents an increase of 3,275 seats over that earlier figure.
Earlier NMC data had also indicated a sharp rise in private medical education capacity, with MBBS seats in private institutions showing an increase of nearly 78% compared with the previous year. At the time, government colleges had more than 63,000 seats, while private institutions accounted for around 73,643 seats.
“All Medical Colleges are advised to carefully verify the details pertaining to their respective institutions in the enclosed Seat Matrix for the Academic Year 2026–27. In case any discrepancy or omission is noticed, the same shall be brought immediately to the notice of the President, MARB, or the Director, MARB, at pratap.ram@nic.in, for examination and appropriate decision, preferably before commencement of the counselling process,” states the official notice.
The revised matrix will be important for NEET UG 2026 counselling. Candidates should check the latest seat information before making or revising their college preferences, as availability can vary by institution, state and category. The latest figures take India’s MBBS capacity beyond 1.40 lakh seats, with private institutions accounting for more than half of the total intake.
