Australia on Thursday accused OpenAI of an “unacceptable” breach after an autonomous AI agent accessed public and non-public files on a government health website during an internal research exercise.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the incident happened in June, when the OpenAI system was being used to conduct health research. He said the agent attempted to access restricted information and, after being blocked, looked for ways around the restriction.

“Today I spoke with the CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, to express Australia’s extreme concern about this incident,” Albanese said.

He also criticised OpenAI for taking until September 10 to notify the Australian government, saying the first alert was sent to a generic public mailbox.

“I also expressed my disappointment that it took the company way too long to inform the government what had occurred,” he added.
