Mohanlal reacts to Patriot criticism: I liked the movie despite mixed reactions

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has responded to the criticism surrounding Patriotsaying he agreed to do the film because the story offered him a “different experience” when it was first narrated to him. Directed by Mahesh Narayanan, the action drama reunited Mohanlal and Mammootty on screen after several years. However, the film has received mixed reactions from audiences since its release.

Expectations around the film were high, particularly among fans expecting mass commercial moments from the veteran stars. While some viewers appreciated the film’s treatment, a section of the audience expressed disappointment, with criticism also directed at Mohanlal’s character arc.

Speaking to Galatta Plus Mohanlal said he still stood by the film and felt audiences often separate the actor from the character while evaluating performances. “Mixed reactions are coming in for the film. But I liked the movie. Very often, people evaluate a film by separating the character from the actor, and there is nothing we can do about that. When the story of this film was narrated to me, it felt like a different experience. That is why I agreed to do it,” he said.

The actor also opened up about the unpredictability of cinema and explained that no filmmaker or actor can accurately foresee a film’s commercial outcome. “When we make a film, it is impossible to predict how successful it will become. It is like a mystery formula. Even so, I approach every film with complete love and confidence. That is my job and also my social responsibility,” he added.

Referring to DrishyamMohanlal said even that film’s success was unexpected. He also spoke about the responsibility involved in making Drishyam 3. “Georgekutty and his family are something audiences all over the world are eagerly waiting to see. That is why we cannot take those characters lightly. We have to approach that film with great seriousness and honesty,” he said.

Meanwhile, Fahadh Faasil’s performance in Patriot has also drawn divided opinions online. Defending the actor in an interview with Movie World Media, Mahesh Narayanan said Fahadh’s character came from a troubled emotional background and was never designed as a conventional villain. As Patriot continues to spark debate among viewers, Mohanlal is now gearing up for the release of Drishyam 3 on May 21.
