An acid attack survivor made a heartbreaking plea for justice on Thursday, 16 years after the brutal incident, and simultaneously called for support for other women, including those forced to drink acid. This prompted shock and outrage from the Supreme Court.
Chief Justice Surya Kant’s bench demanded that the Delhi court handling her case expedite the trial by conducting daily hearings. He condemned the delayed trial, labeling it “a shame… a mockery of the system,” and stressed that perpetrators of acid attacks should not receive any sympathy from law enforcement.
Regarding the appeal to assist women compelled to drink acid, who are not currently protected under existing laws, the court issued a notice to the Union Government.
“The offence occurred in 2009, and the trial remains incomplete! If the national capital cannot address these challenges, then who will? It is a disgrace to the system.”
The court was addressing a petition stating that the Delhi acid attack survivor had lost faith in the judicial system until a judge began hearing her case. This relief motivated her to advocate for other women who endured similarly horrific assaults.
“Acid was thrown on me. I am covered under the law, but many others are forced to drink acid… and they are not covered,” she said. She highlighted cases where, if women survive, they suffer severe long-term medical issues and physical disabilities, including being unable to walk or eat, necessitating the use of feeding tubes.
The court issued a notice to the government to consider enacting an ordinance to include such cases under the current law, especially regarding medical care and compensation. It also directed all lower courts to provide data on ongoing acid attack trials in their jurisdictions.
