External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday called for diplomacy to address global challenges, saying military solutions would not resolve the crises facing the world.

Addressing the first plenary session of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Atlanta, Jaishankar also raised concerns over attacks on civilian shipping and seafarers, stressing the need to protect freedom of navigation in accordance with international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

“Emphasised that in the face of global challenges, military solutions will not work and diplomacy must be given a chance,” Jaishankar said in a post on X, outlining his remarks at the meeting hosted by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

His comments come amid ongoing conflicts, including the Russia-Ukraine war and escalating tensions in West Asia.

Jaishankar Flags Maritime Security, Supply Chain Risks

The minister highlighted the impact of attacks on civilian vessels, warning that the Global South was bearing a disproportionate share of the consequences. Such disruptions, he said, threatened the availability and affordability of essential commodities, including fuel, food and fertilisers.

At least 22 Indians, including 14 seafarers, have lost their lives since the conflict in West Asia began in February.

Jaishankar also criticised practices that restrict countries’ industrial growth, including market flooding, the use of supply chains as strategic weapons and barriers to market access. “This must cease,” he said.

He further called for stronger alternative connectivity networks as countries seek to reduce risks and diversify their economic links.

Warning against overlooking terrorism, he said: “Tactical calculations should not lead to overlooking the dangers of terrorism. It is a high-risk activity which has come back to bite even the practitioners.”

Rubio Warns Of Global Economic And Geopolitical Crises

Opening the two-day meeting, Rubio called the current situation as a critical moment for the international community.

“I would call it a moment of choosing, and I would say not just for my country, the United States of America, but frankly for the world,” he said.

He warned that interconnected geopolitical and economic crises were threatening global energy and food markets, supply chains, trade and freedom of navigation.

Rubio called on G20 members to work together to strengthen economic resilience and protect international markets.

Jaishankar is also scheduled to attend a Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with counterparts from the US, Japan and Australia on the sidelines of the G20 gathering. He will subsequently travel to Antigua and Barbuda for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting from November 1 to 4.
