Oil tanker MT Lewis 1 carrying 27 Indian crew members was attacked in Hormuz on Friday. Two limpet mines were installed on this Panama-flagged tanker.
The explosion caused a fire in the engine room and the ship was shut down for some time. But the crew extinguished the fire.
A day before this incident, the very large Liberian flagged crude oil tanker MT Arzana was also attacked. There were two Indian nationals on board MT Arjana.
India’s Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal issued a statement saying that all the sailors were safe and no one was injured.
Use of limpet mines for the first time
According to Reuters, this is the first incident of successful use of limpet mines in Hormuz since the conflict began in February.
The attack is part of a series of attacks on merchant ships passing through Hormuz. These attacks have increased after the war between America and Iran escalated in February.
According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, the British naval agency, the attack occurred 46 kilometers off Khasab, Oman.
Preparations to attack Iran after US elections
America and Israel are planning to attack Iran again after the US midterm elections to be held on November 3.
According to the Wall Street Journal, both countries are considering small but swift military action. In this, Iran’s energy bases, nuclear centers and stockpile of missiles and drones can be targeted.
However, Trump may also decide not to take military action yet.
Efforts for talks between America and Iran also continue
Iran had said on Thursday that it had received the letter from US Vice President JD Vance, but it has not yet responded. According to the Wall Street Journal, the purpose of this letter was to restart peace talks between the two countries.
Iran has reiterated its demand to fulfill its 7 conditions placed before America. On the other hand, Trump said that Vance had contacted Iran not for peace talks, but for the delivery of medical goods.
According to Trump, Iran had asked for help with medical supplies and other essential items for sick people. Vance had consulted him about this and he gave permission for help.
