The number of MBBS, PG, and DNB seats in medical colleges across Delhi is set to rise significantly, with the Delhi government preparing a roadmap for expanding medical education capacity. Under the plan, 300 MBBS seats and 103 PG/DNB seats will be added at new and existing medical institutions. Five fellowship seats are also proposed, taking the total number of new medical seats to 408.
Health Minister Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh said the initiative aims to address the shortage of doctors and specialists in Delhi’s government hospitals while building a stronger medical workforce to meet the capital’s healthcare needs.
Hospital-wise seat expansion proposed
Under the greenfield model, 150 MBBS seats each are proposed at the medical colleges being developed at Indira Gandhi Hospital (IGH) and Guru Gobind Singh Hospital in Dwarka. Together, these institutions will add 300 new undergraduate seats.
Under the brownfield expansion plan, MBBS seats at Dr B.S.A. Medical College are proposed to increase from 125 to 200. The number of BDS seats at Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences (MAIDS) is also proposed to rise from 50 to 70.
At Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), PG seats are proposed to increase from 260 to 295, while MAIDS will see its PG seats rise from 22 to 42. BSA Medical College is also expected to introduce new PG courses with 24 seats.
Overall, the government’s roadmap provides for 103 new PG/DNB seats across various government medical institutions, including 67 MD/MS and 36 DNB seats. In addition, five fellowship seats are proposed—three at GTB Hospital and two at the Delhi State Cancer Institute. This would take the total number of new seats at the PG, DNB, and fellowship levels to 108.
Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh said the expansion is not limited to increasing the number of seats but is aimed at producing more trained doctors, specialists, and super-specialists who can provide better healthcare to Delhi’s residents. He said that under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s leadership, the government is steadily expanding medical education capacity while also strengthening infrastructure, faculty, and patient-care facilities.
The government is also working to expand super-specialty programmes such as DM/MCh and structured post-doctoral fellowships. The process of securing the required approvals from competent authorities, including the National Medical Commission (NMC), is currently underway to implement the proposed roadmap.
