A controversy has erupted over alleged intimidation of Kannada-speaking employees at a Zomato warehouse in Bengaluru, with Kannada activists staging a protest after a supervisor was accused of insisting that workers learn Hindi.

According to a complaint filed by PSI Srinivas of Madanayakanahalli Police Station on October 5, a person identified as Karthik Venkatesh shared a video on his X account at around 7 pm on October 4.

The video allegedly showed Ashok, an employee working at Zomato near Makali, speaking disparagingly to Kannada-speaking employees.

In the video, Ashok allegedly said, “I have already told you. How many times have I told you? You keep leaving the job. If you want to work, come and work properly; otherwise, leave. But I do not know Kannada, so I speak in Hindi. If you want to work here, learn Hindi and come. I know that this is Karnataka, but our work should be completed quickly and on time. That is what is important to me. Focus on your work.”

The complaint states that Ashok allegedly spoke in a manner that insulted the Kannada language and could potentially affect communal harmony and cause a law-and-order situation. An NCR has been registered at Madanayakanahalli Police Station against Ashok.

Following the incident, pro-Kannada activists staged a protest and surrounded the Zomato warehouse, demanding that Ashok be removed from his job immediately. Police reached the spot as the protest continued.
