Mary Kom needs no introduction. The celebrated Indian boxer is a six-time world champion and an Olympic medallist, making her one of the most accomplished athletes in the country’s sporting history. Her reported participation in Bigg Boss 20 is particularly intriguing because she comes from a completely different world from television actors and influencers.

2012 London Olympics bronze medallist MC Mary Kom’s team has issued a clarification after a comment from the boxer during Bigg Boss triggered massive backlash on social media.

The controversy emerged during a conversation between Mary and fellow contestant Qazi Touqeer about Indian women who have made their mark in sport. The latter mentioned tennis star Sania Mirza and shuttler Saina Nehwal before the former made a remark that drew attention online.

Mary has been India’s most successful boxer, with six World Championship gold medals to her name.

Which girls have done wonders in sports in our country?? Sania Mirza also did great; Saina Nehwal,” Qazi said.

Before he could finish, Mary interjected, saying, “But no one has achieved like me.”

A clip of the exchange went viral on social media, with multiple viewers taking issue with how the remark came across. While some felt Qazi was acknowledging the achievements of multiple Indian sporting icons, Mary’s response appeared to shift the conversation towards a comparison.

The criticism prompted Mary’s team to address the problem through her official account, clarifying that her words weren’t intended to undermine another athlete or diminish anyone else’s achievements.

“We apologise if Mary’s words were misunderstood. There was never any intention to demean or compare the journey with that of another athlete,” her team tweeted on Sunday afternoon.

Mary’s boxing record is among the most decorated in Indian sport. She won a bronze medal at the London 2012 Games, becoming the first Indian woman boxer to claim an Olympic medal.
