Legendary goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who retired from international football in 2024, on Thursday (May 21) was included in Germany’s 26-member squad for the upcoming 2026 edition of the FIFA World Cup. The 40-year-old footballer, who played a big role in Germany’s FIFA World Cup title win in 2014, was handed a surprise recall by German coach Julian Nagelsmann, and he will now come out of international retirement to play in the tournament for a fifth time.
He will be Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper in this year’s World Cup, which is starting on June 11, and Alexander Nübel is set to be his deputy.
“Everyone knows the aura and quality Manu has, what he brings to a team,” Nagelsmann said at a squad announcement in Frankfurt. “We’re planning with him as our number one.”
In the German squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026, apart from Neuer, Joshua Kimmich and Antonio Rüdiger have also managed to find a place along with the likes of Leon Goretzka, Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, Kai Havertz, Leroy Sané, and Newcastle striker Nick Woltemade.
But Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig has been dropped from the squad after being called up for the March friendlies. He will however travel with the side to help in training during the tournament.
Kimmich will captain the German side despite Neuer’s return.
Germany, who suffered humiliating group stage exits in the previous two editions of the FIFA World Cup, will begin their tournament this year on June 14 against Curaçao. Their second match is scheduled against Ivory Coast on June 20, and then they will take on Ecuador on June 25.
