Goa Police arrested a 28-year-old doctor from Maharashtra for allegedly raping a Moroccan woman inside the intensive care unit (ICU) of a private hospital in Old Goa.
The accused, identified as Dr Vrushab Doshi from Solapur, was employed at Healthway Hospital, where the incident occurred, officials stated.
Police said the 24-year-old survivor, who was in Goa on a business visa to attend a training programme on Divar Island, was admitted to the hospital after developing health complications at her resort.
According to the complaint, Dr Doshi entered the ICU with a nurse for a medical examination, but later instructed the nurse to leave the room.
The woman alleged that he then sexually assaulted her.
The Old Goa police registered a case and arrested the doctor. He has been remanded in custody.
In a statement issued on Friday, Healthway Hospital confirmed that Dr Doshi had been suspended immediately after the allegations surfaced.
The hospital said the patient continues to receive treatment at the facility and that she was assured full cooperation in pursuing her police complaint.
“The victim was assured full support in filing her complaint and continues to receive treatment at the facility. The foreign national woman was allegedly sexually assaulted by a Maharashtra native doctor. The Old Goa police have already arrested him,” the hospital said.
The Moroccan woman had travelled to Goa with a group for a training programme organised by an NGO working on poverty reduction.
Police are continuing their investigation into the case, said officials.
