A 17-year-old boy was allegedly murdered by another teenager at Sreekaryam in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, according to police. Two people were arrested in connection with the incident, and a girl was taken into custody for questioning.
Abhiram went missing on Sunday evening, November 1. His body was subsequently found near a drain inside a sack and covered with leaves in an area that is not frequently used by the public.
According to police, the murder was allegedly triggered by a relationship-related issue involving the accused, his former girlfriend and her new boyfriend, who was reportedly a friend of Abhiram.
The accused allegedly wanted to contact the girl’s new boyfriend. To reach him, he reportedly used the Instagram ID of his present girlfriend to initiate a conversation with Abhiram and lured him to a meeting.
However, when Abhiram reached the location, he found the accused instead of the person he had expected to meet.
The accused allegedly forced Abhiram to call his friend and bring him to the spot. When the friend did not turn up, Abhiram reportedly tried to leave the site.
According to the statement given by the accused to the police, he attacked Abhiram with a stone, hitting him on the head, before strangling him to death.
He told the police that he was trying to get Abhiram to bring his friend to the location.
He subsequently contacted Umar, 22, seeking his help to dispose of the body. The two allegedly placed the body inside a sack and attempted to dump it in an isolated location near a drain.
Meanwhile, police have also taken the present girlfriend of the prime accused into custody. According to investigators, she provided her Instagram ID to her boyfriend and allegedly advised him on destroying evidence.
Speaking to CNN-News18, Madhu, Abhiram’s father, said he had spoken to Abhiram around 4 PM on Sunday. “He answered the second call, he sounded as if he was panting, told me that he would be home within ten minutes. Maybe he was trying to escape when he picked up my call,” he said.
Madhu said that when his son didn’t reach home by 8 PM, the family approached police around 9 PM.
Subsequently, the family learnt from one of Abhiram’s friends that he had gone to meet a girl. They obtained her phone number and contacted her. However, Madhu alleged that when the police questioned her, she claimed that the phone was with the prime accused.
The deceased’s father then alleged that the prime accused was questioned on the first day but was let off. Madhu said, “The police questioned the prime accused on the first day, they let him off and asked him to come the next day. That was a mistake. “
Dr Arul R B Krishna, Trivandrum City Police Commissioner, said, “By about 11.30 PM, we received the complaint and by 2.30 AM, the FIR was registered. It was a missing persons complaint at the time and we cannot keep the juvenile in custody. “
Further investigation is underway.
