Schools Closure News: With heavy rains continuing to batter Kerala, authorities have declared holidays for educational institutions in several districts on Monday, June 16. The district collectors of Wayanad, Thrissur, Kasaragod, Malappuram, Kannur, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Kottayam, Palakkad, and Pathanamthitta have announced the closure of schools, colleges, anganwadis, professional institutions, and madrasas due to the worsening weather conditions. However, examinations scheduled earlier will go ahead as planned.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to continue in Kerala until June 18. The agency has issued a red alert for five northern districts — Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Malappuram, and Kozhikode — warning of extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20 cm within 24 hours.
Meanwhile, an orange alert has been issued for Palakkad, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Pathanamthitta, indicating the possibility of rainfall between 11 to 20 cm. Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha districts remain under yellow alert, forecasting moderate rainfall between 7 and 12 cm.
The relentless rains have already led to tragic incidents across the state. On Sunday, four rain-related deaths were reported. In Erumeli, 56-year-old plantation worker Muniya Swamy lost his life when a tree fell on his scooter.
In Alappuzha, Bijoy Antony, 32, drowned after his car skidded off the road and plunged into a canal. In Konni, the body of Praveen Shekhar, 47, who went missing after his bike fell into a stream, was recovered. Another victim, KT Ismail, 21, drowned while bathing in a pond in Kannur. Additionally, two people remain missing.
As the monsoon intensifies, the IMD has also warned of strong winds with speeds reaching 50–60 kmph across the state, prompting disaster management teams to remain on high alert.

Karnataka: Schools Shut In Multiple Districts
Authorities in Karnataka’s coastal areas remain on high alert after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall along the state’s coastline.
In view of the warning, district administrations in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, and Shivamogga have declared a holiday for all schools on Monday.
