Indian women’s kabaddi team won their fourth consecutive Asian Games gold, beating Iran 37-34 in a thrilling final.

The Indian women’s kabaddi team held its nerve to edge past spirited Iranians and secure a fourth consecutive Asian Games gold, winning the final 37-34. India ended the competition unbeaten, winning all their Group A matches before beating Nepal in the semifinal held at the Tokai Citizen Gymnasium.

India had outclassed Nepal 48-24 on Friday.

The comprehensive win also kept the defending champions’ unbeaten run in the ongoing edition intact.

India took 22-16 lead in the first half, including two all-out and three bonus points.

Iran though kept fighting as they took seven bonus points and two from super tackles to keep the all-conquering Indian team on their toes. The second half turned out to be a cagey affair with Indian taking three points compared to Iran’s one while the eventual silver medallist took two all out points as well.

However, it was India that prevailed.

The women’s team earlier claimed consecutive victories by defeating Iran, Bangladesh and Japan in the group stages.

Women’s kabaddi became an Asian Games sport for the first time in 2010 and India have dominated every edition so far.

India are the defending champions in the men’s event as well and will face Iran later today in the gold medal match.

Men’s kabaddi has been a part of the Asiad roster since 1990 with India winning eight golds so far. The only other nation to have secured gold apart from India in the competition is Iran, which finished on top in 2018.

India had stunningly settled for a bronze in that edition.
