Delhi Police detained 27 JNU students, including JNUSU president Nitish Kumar, during a protest march demanding an FIR against ABVP over campus violence.

An FIR has been registered against JNUSU President Nitish Kumar, Vice President, General Secretary, and three other students, while they were marching from Sabarmati Dhaba to Vasant Kunj Police Station to demand an FIR against the ABVP. A total of 27 students were detained during the incident.
The FIR was over an earlier attack during a General Body Meeting on Dussehra, which they attribute to rising tensions between left- and right-wing student groups on campus.
The detained students are currently being held at Kapashera Police Station, where they continue their protest.
The incident occurred at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU)’s West Gate when police intervened to stop their march, leading to a confrontation. Left-wing student groups said they were staging a peaceful demonstration to protest alleged violence by ABVP members and police inaction. They also accused the police of using force to stop their march.
The students claimed that they were beaten up by the police at the JNU West Gate. Deputy Commissioner of Police Amit Goel, however, said 70-80 students left the campus at 6 pm to gherao the police station and, when attempts were made to stop them by erecting barricades, clashed with police personnel.
Six security personnel were injured in the clash, while 28 students, including JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) President, Vice President Manisha, and General Secretary Munteha Fatima, were detained.
The confrontation with police came after violence erupted during a General Body Meeting (GBM) of the School of Social Sciences on Friday. While the Left-affiliated groups claimed ABVP members grabbed a woman student by the throat and thrashed several others, the ABVP alleged Left-wing students attacked a woman student and then beat up some others.
“Leftist students began spreading false stories, tearing their shirts, and staging drama to portray themselves as victims,” an ABVP statement said.
JNUSU elections are expected to be held next month.
