Mongolian President Khurelsukh Ukhna met PM Modi in New Delhi on Tuesday. Both the leaders signed an agreement on supply of uranium, $1.7 billion (Rs 15 thousand crore) oil refinery and increasing defense cooperation.

Along with this, strengthening the supply chain of critical minerals (copper, coking coal, uranium) was discussed. 10 agreements (MoUs) were signed between the two countries.

India and Mongolia started strategic friendship 10 years ago and now defense and security cooperation is increasing.

India will send the holy relics of two disciples of Buddha, Arhant Sariputra and Arhant Mahamoggallan, to Mongolia in 2026. Along with this, a Sanskrit teacher will be sent to Gandan Math for one year.

India-Mongolia will become the voice of the Global South

PM Modi said that India will become a strong and reliable friend in the development of Mongolia. He said- Although our borders do not meet, we consider Mongolia as a close friend. Together both countries will strengthen the voice of the Global South. At the same time, Ukhna talked about new avenues for trade.

India needs uranium, copper, gold and zinc from Mongolia. Mongolia has 90,000 tonnes of uranium and has signed an agreement with France to extract 2,500 tonnes.

Special emphasis of both countries on Mongol Oil Refinery

The two leaders laid special emphasis on the $1.7 billion Mongol Oil Refinery project, which will start operation in 2028. This refinery will extract 1.5 million tonnes of oil per year (30,000 barrels per day).

Modi said this is the biggest project with Indian assistance, in which 2,500 Indians and Mongolians are working together. Ukhna called it a big symbol of economic security.

India will send defense officer to Mongolia’s capital

India will send a defense officer to Mongolia’s capital Ulaanbaatar and increase military training. Both countries conduct exercises like Nomadic Elephant and Khan Quest.

At the same time, 8 Mongolian students and teachers will come to India under ICCR. ITEC training slots will be increased by 70.

Mongolia supported India’s permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Also supported temporary membership for 2028-29.
