A search and cordon operation was launched in the Modergam of Kulgam district in Jammu and Kashmir after the presence of two to three militants was detected in the area

An army personnel was injured during an encounter between security forces and terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Saturday. The armyman is undergoing treatment at a hospital.

According to police, a search and cordon operation was launched in the Modergam after the presence of two to three militants was detected in the area, followed by an exchange of fire between security forces and militants. “An encounter has started at Modergam village of Kulgam district. Police and security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow,” police said.

The latest encounter comes amid the annual Amarnath Yatra, which began from the twin base camps of Pahalgam in Anantnag district and Baltal in Ganderbal district on June 29. The 52-day yatra received a fresh batch of more than 5,800 pilgrims earlier in the morning.

The encounter site is 63 km from one of the twin tracks in Pahalgam, which is the traditional and longer route taken by pilgrims paying obeisance at the Amarnath cave shrine. The central government has made elaborate security arrangements for the pilgrimage.
