Applying for an initial public offering (IPO) involves more than choosing a company and placing a bid. As Jio Platforms gears up to make its Dalal Street debut, here is a ready reckoner answering key questions about the IPO application process, eligibility criteria, reserved categories and allotment rules.

What Are Different Investor Categories In An IPO?

IPO investors are broadly classified into three categories:

Retail Individual Investors (RIIs): Individuals applying for shares worth up to Rs 2 lakh in a mainboard IPO fall under the retail category, subject to the issue’s terms.

Non-Institutional Investors (NIIs): Investors applying for more than Rs 2 lakh are generally classified as NIIs. This category includes high-net-worth individuals and is divided into subcategories under the applicable IPO rules.

Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIBs): These include eligible institutional investors such as mutual funds, banks and insurance companies.

The Jio Platforms IPO also has reserved portions for eligible employees and existing shareholders of Reliance Industries, subject to the eligibility conditions specified in the offer documents.

How Can You Apply For Jio IPO?

Investors can apply through their stockbrokers, banks or authorised IPO platforms. Applicants must select the appropriate investor category, enter their PAN and demat account details, specify their bid and approve the payment mandate through the UPI or Application Supported by Blocked Amount (ASBA) facility, as applicable. Those applying under the employee or shareholder categories must also satisfy the relevant eligibility requirements and provide the required details.

How Can You Apply Under Shareholder Category?

A shareholder quota reserves a portion of an IPO for eligible shareholders of a specified company. For the Jio Platforms issue, Rs 2,500 crore has been reserved for eligible shareholders of Reliance Industries out of the reported Rs 30,213-crore issue. Applicants must meet the eligibility conditions and select the shareholder category while submitting their bids. The maximum application size under this category is Rs 2 lakh, according to the issue details provided.

Can You Buy Reliance Industries Shares Now To Qualify For Shareholder Quota?

No. According to the eligibility timeline announced for the issue, investors needed to hold Reliance Industries shares by the specified cut-off date to qualify for the shareholder reservation. The reported eligibility cut-off date was October 14, 2026, meaning investors needed to purchase shares early enough for them to be credited to their demat accounts by that date. Under India’s T+1 settlement system, shares bought on October 14 would generally be credited on the following settlement day and would not qualify for the cut-off. Investors should check the final offer documents for the precise eligibility date and requirements.

How Can You Apply Under Employee Category?

Eligible employees of Reliance Industries and its subsidiaries can apply under the employee reservation, subject to the IPO’s terms. The issue details provided indicate that Rs 500 crore has been reserved for eligible employees, with a maximum application size of Rs 5 lakh. Applicants should verify their eligibility, employee identification requirements and permitted bid limits before submitting an application.

Can You Apply Through Multiple Demat Accounts?

Multiple applications using the same PAN in the same IPO may be treated as duplicate applications and rejected under the applicable rules. Having more than one demat account does not, by itself, allow an investor to submit multiple valid applications in the same category. Investors should follow the issue’s application rules to avoid rejection.

How Can You Improve Your Chances Of IPO Allotment?

There is no guaranteed way to secure an allotment in an oversubscribed IPO. Eligible family members may submit separate applications using their own PANs and demat accounts, provided each application is genuine and complies with the issue’s rules. Investors should not submit duplicate applications under the same PAN in an attempt to improve their chances. Allotment depends on the applicable allocation rules, the number of valid applications and the level of subscription in the relevant category.

Can You Apply Under Multiple IPO Categories?

An investor who meets the eligibility conditions may be able to apply under the shareholder quota as well as another eligible category, such as the retail category, subject to the issue’s terms. However, investors must select the appropriate category based on their bid amount and eligibility. Retail and non-institutional applications are governed by different investment thresholds and allocation rules.

Are Funds Blocked When You Apply For An IPO?

Yes. Under the ASBA or UPI-based application process, the application amount is generally blocked in the investor’s bank account rather than debited immediately. If shares are allotted, the amount payable for the allotted shares is debited. If no shares are allotted, or if the investor receives a smaller allotment than applied for, the applicable excess amount is released in accordance with the process. Investors should ensure that sufficient funds are available in the linked bank account until the application is processed.

When Are IPO Shares Credited To Your Demat Account?

Shares are generally credited to successful applicants’ demat accounts after the basis of allotment is finalised and before the listing date. Under India’s T+3 working-day listing framework, a mainboard IPO typically lists within three working days after the issue closes, subject to the prescribed schedule. The exact dates for allotment, refunds or release of blocked funds, demat credit and listing are specified in the issue timetable. Investors can check their allotment status through the registrar, stock exchanges or other official channels identified for the IPO.
