“Is this how you normally operate?” A Delhi court came down heavily on the Gurugram Police over its handling of the death of Yuvraj Manchanda, raising questions over delayed records, the cremation of his body and glaring discrepancies in post-mortem reports.
The sharp observations came during the hearing of a plea filed by Manchanda’s sister Harsimranwho has sought preservation of records relating to his death. Senior Advocate Amit Prasad, along with Advocates Neharika Kushwah and Ayodhya Prasad, appeared for the complainant.
The court questioned the police over the delay in uploading details on ZIPNET, observing that the delay had taken away the family’s opportunity to conduct the last rites.
The court also flagged the absence of videography of the post-mortem and took note of contradictions between two post-mortem reports. While one report reportedly referred to bullet injuries, another cited drowning as the cause of death.
The court further noted that viscera had not been preserved during the autopsy.
Another key issue before the court was the manner in which Manchanda’s body was cremated. Advocate Neharika Kushwah, appearing for the petitioner, told the court that the body was cremated along with its belongings and that a burnt watch and kada were later recovered from the cremation site.
Kushwah and Ayodhya Prasad also alleged that evidence had been destroyed in an attempt to “save the culprits”.
