Ahead of his participation in the BRICS Summit in India, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian on Friday pushed for de-dollarisation and stressed that the grouping was created to “free countries” from reliance on the dollar.

Pezeshkian is scheduled to arrive in India at 2 PM on Friday to attend the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi. He will also hold a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with the ongoing situation in West Asia expected to dominate the discussions.

“The new BRICS bank was created to free countries from reliance on the dollar and to stand against America’s push for dominance”, the Iranian President said.

India Hosts 18th BRICS Summit

India is hosting the summit on September 12-13 under its 2026 BRICS chairmanship, seeking to use the grouping as a platform for the Global South against the backdrop of a tense geopolitical scenario in the face of multiple ongoing conflicts, including the Russia-Ukraine war and the US-Iran tensions.

India’s theme for the year is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”.

Aside from Pezeshkian, several world leaders –– Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, UAE Crown Prince Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung –– will attend the summit.

US-Iran War

The war in West Asia began on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes on multiple targets across Iran, killing its Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.

Tehran retaliated by launching strikes on US-linked facilities across the Gulf, with the exchange spilling over into a broader conflict that also saw the blockade of the crucial Strait of Hormuz.
