Iran’s chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf praised the Iranian people and armed forces following the announcement of a landmark agreement with the United States, declaring that the country had taken “a great step toward final victory” after months of conflict.

In a brief message posted on X (formerly Twitter), Ghalibaf framed the US-Iran memorandum of understanding not as a concession by Tehran but as the outcome of what he described as Iran’s resilience in the face of military and economic pressure.

“The historic resistance of the Iranian people and the valour of the armed forces against those who sought the life of this nation have enabled Iran to take a great step toward final victory,” Ghalibaf wrote.

The comments came after US President Donald Trump announced that Washington and Tehran had signed an agreement aimed at ending the war, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and launching broader negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme and sanctions relief.

Ghalibaf, who signed the memorandum on behalf of Iran alongside Trump and US Vice President JD Vance, suggested that Tehran had emerged from the confrontation without surrendering its core interests.

“They wanted to, but they couldn’t. We stand firm,” he wrote.

The agreement is expected to usher in a 60-day period of technical negotiations covering issues including sanctions relief, nuclear verification measures and broader regional security arrangements. US officials have said the full text of the memorandum will be released later this week.
