Iran War News Live: The funeral ceremonies for Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei entered their second day on Sunday, with tens of thousands of mourners gathering at Tehran’s Grand Mosalla complex to pay their final respects.
The ceremonies follow Khamenei’s death in a February 28 Israeli airstrike, reportedly carried out with US intelligence support, that also killed four members of his family. The funeral has become one of the biggest public events in Iran in recent decades, with authorities expecting millions of people to participate in processions across several cities before Khamenei is laid to rest in his hometown of Mashhad on Thursday.
The multi-day ceremonies are unfolding at a crucial moment for Iran, just weeks after its war with Israel and the United States ended in a ceasefire. Alongside mourning the country’s longest serving leader, the events are also being used by Tehran to project unity and resilience despite the loss of key military and political figures during the conflict.
While President Masoud Pezeshkian, senior Revolutionary Guards commanders and other top officials attended the prayers, the continued absence of Khamenei’s designated successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, has drawn attention.
Three of his brothers Mostafa, Masoud and Meysam were present, but Mojtaba, who was reportedly injured in the February strike, has not appeared in public since being named Iran’s new Supreme Leader, adding to speculation over his condition.
