Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf will not attend the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in New Delhi due to “unforeseen circumstances”, the Iranian Embassy in India said on Saturday. However, an Iranian parliamentary delegation will participate in the meeting scheduled for October 26-27.
In a statement issued on October 24, the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in New Delhi said Qalibaf, the Speaker of Iran’s Islamic Consultative Assembly, would be unable to attend the meeting of speakers of the parliaments of BRICS member countries.
The embassy reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to active and effective participation at the highest levels in BRICS summits and meetings. It said the Iranian delegation would continue dialogue and consultations with delegations from member countries to expand and deepen bilateral and multilateral cooperation, particularly in parliamentary relations.
The embassy also thanked the Indian government for its hospitality and arrangements for hosting the meeting. It expressed hope that the forum would produce constructive outcomes and strengthen cooperation and engagement among member countries.
