The iPhone 16 Pro was Apple’s flagship device in 2024, promising a premium experience with top-of-the-line performance. Courtesy of the launch of the iPhone 17 series, the iPhone 16 Pro is now available with a massive discount on JioMart.
But is it worth buying a ‘Pro’ iPhone from a year ago? And should you consider a newer iPhone instead? Let’s delve into the deal and answer all your questions.
iPhone 16 Pro on sale for under Rs 79,000
The iPhone 16 Pro is currently listed on JioMart for Rs 83,900. This is for the base variant with 128GB of storage. To give you some context, the iPhone 16 Pro was launched in India at Rs 1,19,900. This means that you are getting a flat discount of Rs 36,000.
And you can even avail bank offers worth up to Rs 5,400. This brings the effective price of the iPhone 16 Pro to under Rs 79,00.
Now on the surface this may appear like a steal. But things get trickier when you notice that the iPhone 17 is available at effectively the same price with bank offers. If you are confused, here are the few things you should know.
Yay 1: Premium design
The iPhone 16 Pro comes with a titanium frame, something that you don’t get with the iPhone 17 Pro series. This gives the device a premium in-hand feel, which may be to your liking.
It is also the last Pro iPhone to come with the square camera module that was first introduced with the iPhone 11, as Apple switched to a large camera plateau last year.
The iPhone 16 Pro comes in some understated shades – Black Titanium, White Titanium and Natural Titanium. Yes, design is subjective. But the iPhone 16 Pro could be your pick if you like a clean and sophisticated look.
Yay 2: A telephoto on an iPhone
The iPhone 16 Pro comes with three cameras on the back – a 48-megapixel main, a 48-megapixel ultrawide, and a 12-megapixel 5x telephoto. Apple has reserved a triple camera setup only for Pro iPhones.
That is, you would need to shell the premium sum if you wanted the company’s best camera setup. And with this deal, you can get a telephoto on an iPhone for the cost of the vanilla iPhone 17 which only gets two cameras – a 48-megapixel main, and a 48-megapixel ultrawide.
So if you are looking for a more versatile setup, the iPhone 16 Pro could be the option for you at this price.
Nay: iPhone 17 just gets basics right
The biggest reason for you to not consider the iPhone 16 Pro would be the iPhone 17. After years, Apple has brought the vanilla iPhone almost on par with its Pro counterparts, including a 120Hz display (finally!). More importantly, the iPhone 17 comes with double the storage, at 256GB.
While the iPhone 16 Pro gets you a premium design and an extra camera, the iPhone 17 gets almost everything else covered. You can expect decent battery life, a good display, and performance that is on par, if not better, than the iPhone 16 Pro.
So the final decision on the iPhone 16 Pro may come down on what you prioritise. If you want that extra camera, or prefer the titanium finish, it may make sense to pick the older Pro, instead of grabbing the new base iPhone.
