International Day Of Education 2026: January 24 is globally celebrated as the International Day of Education to highlight the transformative role knowledge plays in developing our society and the world at large. This is of particular significance to India with its commitment towards becoming the “Vishwa Guru” (Teacher to the World).
One needs only look back at the prestigious educational institutions from India’s ancient past, such as Nalanda and Takshashila to get an idea. Today, India is closer than ever to rebuilding that glory, thanks to the National Educational Policy (NEP), 2020 and digital education initiatives.

The official theme of International Day of Education 2026as revealed by UNESCO, is “The power of youth in co-creating education.”
The theme highlights how the role of the youth should shift from just beneficiaries of education to its co-creators and decision makers. Youth must be partners in curriculum creation at the school and national levels as well as on international levels.
This has so far culminated in a global youth advocacy for educational reformation called ‘Youth Declaration for Transforming Education’ under the United Nations.

International Day of Education is significant in the sense that it puts the spotlight on the vital role played by education in maintaining peace and ensuring sustainable development in the world.
The day highlights the fact that education is a human right that empowers individuals, addresses social inequalities, pushes innovation, and reduces illiteracy.
International Day Of Education 2026: History
On December 3, 2018, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), at its Seventy-third session, proclaimed January 24 as the International Day of Education, via resolution 73/25.
The first global celebration of International Day of Education occurred on January 24, the following year. It was Nigeria which had taken the leading role in the resolution.
International Day Of Education 2026: Global Celebrations
On January 23, this year, UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France will celebrate the International Day of Education via a hybrid event.
UNESCO will release a Global Education Monitoring Report to examine the participation of students and youth in education legislation and policymaking. UNESCO will also unveil a new cohort of the SDG4 Youth & Student Network and highlight its initiatives to support the youth globally. A youth-led global webinar will be held on this day.
