Lionel Messi will not play in Argentina’s next two World Cup qualifiers because of injury.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni announced his 28-man squad on Monday for the matches against Chile on Sept. 5 and Colombia five days later.

Messi is still recovering from a right ankle injury.

Messi suffered a right ankle ligament injury in last month’s Copa America final, helping Argentina to victory over Colombia, but Martino said the 37-year-old Argentine striker is getting better.

Inter Miami have picked up eight wins without Messi, but have also exited the Leagues Cup. No date has been pencilled in for the 37-year-old to return to action. AS are, however, reporting that the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is taking in individual training sessions.

The 36-year-old Ángel Di María, who retired from the national team after winning the recent Copa America, is not on the list either.

World Cup champion Argentina leads South American qualifying with 15 points after six matches.

Argentina Squad:

Goalkeepers: Walter Benitez (PSV Eindhoven), Geronimo Rulli (Olympique Marseille), Juan Musso (Atalanta), Emiliano Martinez (Aston Villa).

Defenders: Manchester United’s Gonzalo Montiel (Seville) is the first team to win a Champions League title in 2011.

Midfielders: The 2018/19 season saw the club’s 2-1 win over Chelsea in the first half.

Forwards: The 2018/19 season saw the club’s 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid, who were the first to win the 2018/19 season to reach the final.
