India’s UPI service started in Greece: Now Indians will be able to make digital payments in 10 countries of the world; Live demo took place in the presence of Piyush Goyal




India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is now live in Greece as well. Greece has become the new country to join this digital payment network. A live demo of this service, launched in partnership between Eurobank and NPCI International Payments Limited, was also seen at Eurobank’s headquarters in Athens. Demo took place in the presence of Union Minister Piyush Goyal Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal saw the live demo of this service during his official visit to Athens. He said that the global acceptance of UPI proves that the world’s trust in India’s technology is increasing. This technology can work well even across borders. Now UPI facility will be available in 10 countries. After Greece joining this network, now UPI can be used in different forms in 10 countries of the world. It offers facilities ranging from QR-code based merchant payments to cross-border remittance services for Indian travelers. UPI was started in Cambodia before Greece. Just before Greece, Cambodia became the 9th country to be included in this list. For this, NPCI International Payments Limited had partnered with ACLEDA Bank there. Under this, cross-border UPI payments were started through Cambodia’s national QR code ‘KHQR’. Earlier, Singapore, UAE, France, Mauritius, Nepal, Bhutan, Qatar and Sri Lanka were listed as the eight countries where UPI is being accepted. It started from the Eiffel Tower of France. France has been a very important part in the expansion of UPI in Europe. UPI was launched from the Eiffel Tower in Paris in the year 2024. After this, this service was expanded to major retail destinations like ‘Galeries Lafayette’ located in Nice. What is UPI and the future of its global expansion? How does UPI work on foreign soil? Indian travelers can make payments abroad directly from their Indian bank account through international roaming or activated UPI app by scanning the local QR code (like KHQR in Cambodia or Eurobank Merchant Network in Greece).
