‘Can’t Pay Off Loan’: Indian Student In US Considers Returning Home After Failing To Secure Full-Time Job

An Indian student in the United States says he is considering returning home after struggling to secure a stable job months after graduation.

In a Reddit post, the student shared that he moved to the US less than two years ago for a master’s degree but has been unable to find a full-time role despite nearly a year of job searching.

The student indicated that he was working under a contractual position, and his earnings depended on the availability of work. This posed a challenge in meeting even the basic expenditures such as rent and savings.

“I’m literally living paycheque to paycheque and can’t pay off loan/save,” the student wrote.

With his Optional Practical Training (OPT) period set to end in May, the uncertainty has added pressure. However, although the student qualifies for a STEM OPT extension through his e-verified employer, he is still uncertain about whether staying in America will be economically feasible.

He mentioned his employer had suggested another course of action. If he returns to India, he could switch to an international contractor role, which may allow him to save more and repay his education loan faster.

“I do have a loan to pay off, but my current employer said that he can switch me to an international contractor,” the post said.

The situation has also affected the student’s long-term plans. He said his goal is to pursue a PhD, but repeated job rejections have made the decision more difficult.

“Should I persevere and stay here and continue job applications (I’ve done 1,000 by now!)? Or is it not worth it anymore?” the student wrote.

The post drew mixed responses from other users. Some advised returning to India to focus on financial stability, while others suggested staying in the US to gain experience through the STEM OPT extension.

“Move back, I did, and I love it!” one user commented. Another wrote, “Do stem opt. You’ll at least learn and gain international experience.”

Others pointed to the current job market, suggesting that the student weigh the cost of staying against potential long-term benefits.

The post continues to circulate online, reflecting broader concerns among international students navigating employment challenges after graduation in the US.
