Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s address to the United Nations General Assembly turned the spotlight on Islamabad’s version of the 2025 India-Pakistan military conflict as an Indian diplomat’s visible reaction to his remarks was widely shared on social media.
As Shehbaz Sharif claimed that Pakistan’s military had “silenced the enemy” and “taught it a lesson” during the conflict, Indian diplomat R Srinivas was seen on camera appearing to chuckle and shake his head.
Shehbaz Sharif praised Pakistan’s military response to India’s Operation Sindoor, saying its personnel had responded with “precision and professionalism”.
“They silenced the enemy, repulsed its attack and taught it a lesson it shall never, ever forget,” Shehbaz Sharif said while recounting Pakistan’s version of the May 2025 confrontation.
India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025, days after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 civilians were killed. India said the operation targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Shehbaz Sharif also used his UNGA address to thank US President Donald Trump for what he described as his “timely intervention” during the 2025 conflict.
“His timely intervention came at a decisive juncture when two nuclear-armed neighbours stood at the brink of an all-out war,” Shehbaz Sharif said, crediting Trump with helping prevent further escalation.
Shehbaz Sharif described Trump’s role as “resolute and visionary leadership” and said his intervention had saved “hundreds of millions of lives” in South Asia.
Trump has repeatedly claimed credit for helping end the India-Pakistan hostilities. India, however, has consistently rejected the claim of third-party mediation, maintaining that the understanding to halt military action was reached directly between India and Pakistan.
Shehbaz Sharif also warned that any attempt to stop, impede or divert Pakistan’s share of Indus waters would be treated as an “act of war”. India has placed the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance following the Pahalgam attack and has linked its position to Pakistan ending support for cross-border terrorism.
