Having started their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Paris Olympics silver medallist China, India will look to pull off a win against a lower-ranked South Africa and give themselves a chance to move into the next round of the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup.
England lead Pool D after their 4-0 victory over South Africa, with China and India next in the standings, while South Africa are fourth.
For the semi-final stage, the top two teams from each pool will be split into two groups of four teams each, Pool E and Pool F. Each team will face the opponents they didn’t play in the first round.
A team’s result against the other team from its pool that advances to the second round will be carried forward. This means India and China will not face each other again if both progress, with the point earned from their draw carried over to the next stage.
For India, Tuesday’s clash presents a chance to take control of their qualification hopes. A victory over South Africa would strengthen their chances of finishing in the top two while also giving them valuable momentum heading into their final pool game.
Navneet Kaur, who was named Player of the Tournament at the World Cup Qualifiers, has continued her brilliant form into the tournament and will be one of India’s biggest attacking threats.
But coach Sjoerd Marijne knows there is room for improvement in possession and ball retention.
