Actor Emraan Hashmi once found himself at the centre of controversy after making a blunt remark about Aishwarya Rai during his appearance on Koffee with Karan in 2014. Known for his candid answers, the actor was asked to name a celebrity he associated with the word “plastic” during a rapid-fire round.
And without much hesitation, he named Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. The comment immediately grabbed attention and sparked reactions from fans and the film industry.
Following his comment, Emraan faced heavy backlash. Years later, in 2025, while promoting his OTT series Showtime in an interview with India Today’s sister channel Lallantopthe actor addressed his controversial remark about Aishwarya and apologised for it.
The 47-year-old actor was asked if he regretted calling Aishwarya “plastic,” to which he responded, “I regret it. I keep saying that I have the utmost respect for everyone I spoke about. I regret it because it was distasteful. Lately, people have become very sensitive. They get mad at everything on social media. In terms of the show, we were playing a game, it was all in jest. It was supposed to be taken sportingly. There are many such games in the show. Earlier, people weren’t this sensitive.”
He added, “Karan Johar himself confessed that the rapid-fire round in the latest season of the show (in 2025) was the most boring. It’s because now, the environment has completely changed. You can’t give such answers anymore. At that time, I just wanted to win the hamper and I ended up saying what I said.”
Looking back at his controversial response, Emraan said he was simply focused on winning the hamper at the time and ended up saying what came to his mind.
In the same interview, the Murder actor was also asked if he had ever met Aishwarya before. Emraan then recalled an old anecdote about waiting for three hours just to catch a glimpse of her after her film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.
“I was a huge fan. Mohit and I were shooting in Filmistan; I told him, ‘You cannot go anywhere.’ So we waited together. I still am a big fan of hers,” he said.
Emraan then said that he would want to meet her in person and apologise for his comments if that offended her.
“I would love to meet her and apologise if she felt bad about it. I will have to meet her and ask her. I am sorry if I offended you,” he concluded.
Even years after the remarks, the actor confessed how he had to bear the brunt of the same. During his interview with Bollywood Bubble in 2024, Emraan shared that he had to face a lot for his candid remarks on the show.
“Talking about Koffee With Karanwell I had to bear the brunt for it for quite some time for really calling a spade a spade. You know what, when that rapid-fire round happened, Karan had cut the shot, and he just looked around on the set and everyone was dumbfounded. He asked ‘Can you actually keep this (Emraan’s answer)?’ And a couple of people behind the camera said ‘Yes’,” he recalled.
Aishwarya, however, never directly responded to Emraan’s remark. In a 2019 interview with Movie dangerthe Ponniyin Selvan actor was asked about the harshest thing anyone had said about her and revealed that being called “fake and plastic” was the worst comment she had received.
Meanwhile, Emraan is currently enjoying the box office run of his latest release, Awarapan 2. Directed by Nitin Kakkar, the film also stars Disha Patani, Shabana Azmi and Suvinder Vicky in key roles. It is a sequel to the 2007 film Awarapan.
