India Relief Supplies Reach Flood-Hit Nepal; US, EU Say They ‘Stand Ready’ To Support

India’s humanitarian assistance for Nepal’s flood response has reached Kathmandu, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Wednesday, as rescue efforts continued in the flood-hit country.

“India’s HADR and medical assistance has reached Kathmandu. More assistance is being mobilised to support relief efforts,” Jaishankar said in a post on X. He had earlier said India had dispatched 10 tonnes of humanitarian assistance and essential medicines to support Nepal’s response to the devastating floods.

“Dispatched 10 tonnes of HADR assistance and essential medicines to support Nepal’s response to the devastating floods. Our thoughts are with the bereaved families and all those affected. In face of this challenge, India stands with Nepal and its people,” the foreign minister shared.

PM Modi Assures Nepal Of Support

The aid comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to his Nepalese counterpart Balendra Shah and assured him of India’s support. PM Modi conveyed his condolences over the loss of lives and said India was ready to provide all possible humanitarian assistance.

“Our teams are coordinating closely on rescue and relief efforts,” Modi said.

The devastating floods and landslides along the Nepal-China border have killed at least 160 people, with hundreds still missing. Several towns and villages have been badly hit, while bridges and hydropower projects have also been damaged.

US, EU Offer Support

The United States along with several other world leaders have expressed solidarity with Nepal and said they are ready to provide assistance.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington was “united in prayer for the Nepali people” and that the State Department “stands ready to support” Nepal with humanitarian assistance.

The EU also said it was ready to support Nepal’s emergency response. Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he was “deeply dismayed by the news of devastating floods in Nepal and China. My thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones. I wish all those helping on the ground strength and courage in the hours and days ahead. We stand ready to support”.

The UK said its consular team was working with local authorities to support British nationals in the affected region, while Canada urged its citizens in Nepal to register with its emergency tracking system.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed solidarity with those affected and said the UN was supporting Nepal’s government-led response.

“In Nepal, the United Nations is supporting the Government-led response, including assessing the scale of the disaster and delivering urgent assistance. UN teams and humanitarian partners are mobilizing supplies and personnel to support communities affected by the floods,” the UN chief said in a statement.
