The house of Indian hockey legend MM Somaya, a member of India’s gold medal-winning team at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, was burgled in Bengaluru’s Indiranagar, with thieves allegedly making away with his Olympic gold medal, an Asian Games silver medal, two bronze medals and other valuables.

The theft came to light after Somaya returned to Bengaluru from Kodagu on Wednesday (October 28).

According to the FIR registered at the Indiranagar police station, Somaya had left his residence at around 5 pm on October 25 and returned at approximately 7.15 am on October 28, only to discover that his house had been burgled.

The FIR states that the burglars broke into the house and stole several valuables, including medals and memorabilia that Somaya had won during his illustrious hockey career.

The stolen sporting memorabilia included a gold medal won as part of the Indian hockey team at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, a silver medal from the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi, a bronze medal from the 1986 Seoul Asian Games, and another bronze medal won at the 1982 Champions Trophy in Amsterdam.

Police have registered a case under Sections 331(4) and 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, relating to house-breaking and theft.
