India has gifted 12 agricultural drones to Fiji to support more efficient, technology-enabled and sustainable sugarcane production in the country.
India’s High Commissioner to Fiji, Suneet Mehta, formally handed over the drones to Fiji’s Minister of Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry, Tomasi Tunabuna, in Lautoka.
The drones have been gifted by the Indian government to the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) and fulfil a commitment announced during Fiji Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s visit to New Delhi in August 2025.
India-Fiji Cooperation In Agriculture
The handover reflects the broader cooperation between India and Fiji in agriculture and the sugar sector.
India has previously supported Fiji through the supply of seeds, mobile soil-testing laboratories and specialised training for Fijian sugarcane farmers at the National Sugar Institute in Kanpur under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme.
The 12 drones are expected to support more efficient and technology-enabled sugarcane production in Fiji, while contributing to agricultural innovation, productivity and resilience.

The drone handover comes amid wider discussions between India and Fiji on strengthening bilateral cooperation.
On September 8, Mehta met Fiji Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica. The discussions covered agriculture, health, trade, business and economic cooperation, among other areas of mutual interest.
Last month, Mehta also met Fiji’s Minister of Land and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo. The discussions focused on cooperation in the mineral sector, capacity building, and further strengthening the bilateral partnership.
