Record of hoisting the Indian flag the most times
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru holds the record for hoisting the tricolor the most times. He tops this list, having hoisted the tricolor 17 times from the ramparts of the Red Fort. Nehru did so continuously from 1947 to 1964. Following him is Indira Gandhi, who hoisted the flag 16 times—11 times from 1966 to 1977 and 5 times consecutively from 1980 to 1984.
PM Modi’s new record
Today, on August 15, 2025, PM Narendra Modi hoisted the tricolor for the 12th consecutive time. He is the first non-Congress PM to achieve this record, surpassing Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who hoisted the flag 6 times. PM Modi has been hoisting the tricolor from the Red Fort annually since 2014. This Independence Day is particularly special as it is his first after winning the 2024 elections for the third time.
PM Narendra Modi also holds the record for delivering the longest speech from the Red Fort. His 2024 speech lasted 98 minutes, the longest since independence. Previously, in 2016, he gave a 96-minute speech, and in 2020 and 2023, he delivered 90-minute speeches.
Pandit Nehru’s longest speech was 72 minutes in 1947, a record at the time. Indira Gandhi’s longest speech lasted 54 minutes in 1971. Notably, PM Inder Kumar Gujral also delivered a 71-minute speech in 1971.
