Income Tax Return Refund Status: The income tax return (ITR) filing for non-audit taxpayers for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26) ended on September 15, 2025, a 45-day extension from the earlier deadline of July 31, 2025. Taxpayers are now awaiting their ITR refunds, which typically take 4-5 weeks.

Sometimes, taxpayers won’t receive their ITRs on time. Verification, bank mismatch, or incorrect data can cause delays in the ITR refund process.

The IT department urges taxpayers to verify information on discrepancies and check emails regularly for any notifications if the refunds have not been processed within 4-5 weeks.

“However, if refund is not received during this duration, the taxpayer must check for intimation regarding discrepancies in ITR; check email for any notification from the IT department regarding the refund,” the I-T Department said.

If your tax refund hasn’t arrived yet, ensure that you’ve verified your ITR. Failing to e-verify your ITR renders the filing incomplete, rendering your ITR invalid.

Income Tax Refund Status: Steps How To Check

Step 1: Go to the Income Tax India website at https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/.

Step 2: Log in to the portal using your registered USER ID (PAN number), the password, and the captcha code.

Step 3: Look for ‘View Returns / Forms’.

Step 4: Then click on the ‘Select An Option’ link and then on ‘Income tax Returns’ link from the drop-down list. Enter the assessment year and click on submit.

Step 5: To check the details, click on the ITR acknowledgment number to view the ITR refund status.

The ‘refund paid’ status is also recorded in the ‘Tax Credit Statements’ in Form 26AS.

If there is some issue in your ITR bank details, it will show: ‘No Records Found, check your e-filing processing status by navigating through e-File – > Income Tax Returns – > View Filed Returns‘.
