University leadership says that in an era of rapid technological disruption, it is increasingly important for students to pursue adaptive, lifelong learning and transdisciplinary education. As artificial intelligence (AI) and the rapidly changing technological landscape are reshaping industries around the world, universities need to think beyond just preparing students for their first job. Instead, institutions should empower students to successfully handle various career transitions and stages in their lives, said speakers at the ‘Open House’ organized at the World Peace University (WPU), Goa. This open house was organized on June 20. The event brought together prospective students, parents and teachers to discuss the future of higher education and the changing expectations from universities in an increasingly unpredictable world. At the center of this conversation was WPU Goa’s ‘transdisciplinary’ education model. This model attempts to combine depth in a subject with the ability to think across domains, adapt to change, and solve complex real-world challenges. Academics as well as practical experiences Vice Chancellor Professor Walter Leal said, WPU Goa is being established with a transdisciplinary approach that encourages faculty and students to think and engage beyond the boundaries of any one discipline. Here, along with studies, emphasis is given on practical experience, industry engagement, global perspective and self-learning. Its objective is to prepare students in such a way that they can keep learning throughout their life, can adapt to every situation and can lead. Apart from this, this education also opens up good career paths for the students in both private and government sectors, so that they can put their learning to good use. Dr Ashish Bhardwaj, Pro-Vice Chancellor, WPU Goa, said universities can no longer assume that preparing students for their first job is enough. An even more important question is whether we are preparing students for the many changes, transitions, and opportunities they will encounter throughout their lives. The future is not just about experts, but about people who can continuously learn, connect ideas from different fields, and meet challenges that don’t fit into traditional categories.” New professions are emerging This discussion considered how long-held assumptions about higher education are being challenged as industries evolve more rapidly than traditional academic cycles. New professions are emerging, established roles are changing, and The competition is now increasingly focused on individuals who can combine expertise across multiple disciplines, highlighting how the ability to learn, adapt, and work collaboratively across disciplines can be just as important as curiosity, flexibility, and lifelong learning as essential capabilities for future careers. Emphasizing that higher education institutions should continuously focus on preparing students for opportunities that cannot be predicted now, WPU Goa currently offers B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), B.Des. in Integrated Product Design, and B.Des. in Psychology. At a time when students and parents are looking for clarity on the future of the workplace, the discussion emphasized the need for higher education institutions to not only focus on employability but also prepare learners to successfully handle the ongoing changes throughout their professional lives.
