Expert said- students are adopting trend without taking risk
Pro. According to V. Ramgopal, former director, IIT Delhi and vice-chancellor, BITS Pilani Group, once a trend in an institute or branch is established, it takes a lot of time to change it. There is no dearth in the faculty, facilities and standards of old IITs like Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur and Kharagpur. Toppers want to take admission in Bombay also because last year’s toppers had also taken admission there.
According to him, students do not want to take risk. They feel that the previous topper must have chosen an institute very thoughtfully. This trend has been changing with time in the top-7 IITs. Once there was such a trend for Kharagpur and Kanpur, then it became for Delhi. If top-1000 rankers do not get seats in a branch like CSE, they prefer BITS.
According to experts, one of the reasons for less interest in core courses like civil, electrical and mechanical is the initial salary package. The average package of CSE is said to be Rs 30 lakh, while in Civil it is less than half of that. However, with increasing experience the career in both the trades becomes equal.
