US President Donald Trump on Thursday expressed confidence that Washington and New Delhi would soon conclude a trade agreement. He referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “good friend” with whom he shares a strong relationship.
“We will get to a deal because I like your Prime Minister a lot; he is a good friend of mine, and we get along well. We have a good relationship,” Trump told reporters at White House.

The US President also reiterated his longstanding criticism of India’s tariff regime, arguing that New Delhi had for years imposed high duties on American goods while enjoying favourable access to the US market.
“For years, India took advantage of the United States. They charged us tremendous tariffs and paid nothing,” Trump said.
However, he claimed that the trade dynamic had shifted in recent years, with the United States now benefiting more from its economic ties with India.
“Now it is the exact reverse and we are making a lot of money with India,” he said.

Trump cited the example of American motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson, which he has frequently used to highlight what he considers unfair trade barriers. “They would not let Harley-Davidson in. They would charge 200% tariffs. Unfortunately, this happened before me. They wanted to sell motorbikes here and we charged them nothing,” he said.
His remarks come amid ongoing negotiations between Washington and New Delhi aimed at finalising a bilateral trade deal, which both sides have said could significantly expand economic cooperation and market access.

A US delegation was in India earlier this week and concluded four days of negotiations on an interim bilateral agreement on Thursday.
India’s commerce ministry said the trade talks were marked by a spirit of cooperation and pragmatism, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to concluding a mutually beneficial agreement that strengthens bilateral trade and economic ties.
