Hyundai Launches large-scale manufacturing of AI chips for autonomous machines


Hyundai Motor Group has began mass production of its very own AI chip that it designed for autonomous machines.

The notification was provided on the 9th of January, Friday during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2026 taking place in Las Vegas. This development/launch marks a significant step forward for Hyundai regarding robotics and advanced technology.

Edge brain chip enables autonomous robots

The artificial intelligence chip has been named Edge Brain. It is an on-device chip, that allows robots to work independently without relying on the internet connection or cloud support.

With this chip, the robots can visualize, reason, and take actions by themselves in real time. This is especially useful for areas where the internet connect is poor or unreliable.

Hyundai announced that the Edge Brain chip is extremely energy efficient and consumes less than 5 watts of power.

Even though the power consumption is low, it has the ability of accepting complex operations like face recognition, environment perception, and quick decision-making. As a result, it becomes ideal for robots operating over long periods of time and requiring infrequent charging.

Three-year partnership with DeepX bears fruit

The chip is the outcome of a collaborative venture between Hyundai Motor Group’s Robotics Lab and DeepX, an AI chip company based in South Korea that lasted for three years.

Hyundai presented the benefits of this collaboration at CES 2026, illustrating the potential of the chip to uplift the robots’ performance and autonomy.

Hyundai revealed that the Edge Brain chip has already been applied in some of their projects that are still running.

One such project is Facey, a developing facial recognition system. Another is the delivery robot that is still at the demonstration phase. these projects illustrate the chip’s potential for real-world application, as reported by IANS.

Plans to expand use across robotics and security

Hyundai will not only implement the chip in more projects in the near future but also in AI-based security systems and next-generation mobile robots.

The company plans to conduct pilot projects where the robots will be placed in real environments like airports and hospitals to see how the technology handles busy and complicated places.

Hyundai’s advanced technology activities do not limit to robotics at all. At the CES 2026, Hyundai Motor Group’s Executive Chair Euisun Chung had a closed-door meeting with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang in Las Vegas.

This meeting has led to a speculation that Hyundai and Nvidia might collaborate on autonomous driving technologies in the future.

Industry experts see big future in AI partnerships

It was not the first encounter of the two leaders. They had met in Seoul earlier during an informal gathering in October which also had Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong attending.

That meeting happened when Jensen Huang was in South Korea for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit and took place during his visit.

According to industry specialists, collaborations between firms such as Hyundai and Nvidia are likely to significantly impact the future of driverless cars and intelligent machines.

The manufacturing of its AI processor on a large scale has been a giant leap for Hyundai in the race to be a dominant player in the fully automated vehicle technology market.
