How Students Are Preparing For AI-Driven Careers While Still In School?

With Artificial Intelligence increasingly becoming part of everyday life, Indian students and parents are trying to understand opportunities to understand AI well before college starts. Schools too are moving beyond traditional computer education to introduce computational thinking, artificial intelligence, coding, data, robotics, to make students future ready. The focus is shifting towards giving students practical skills that can help them adapt to an AI-driven workplace.

CBSE Introduces Computational Thinking and AI

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced a dedicated Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence curriculum for Classes 3 to 8 from the 2026–27 academic session. The programme develops logical reasoning, algorithmic thinking, problem-solving and AI awareness at an early age. Students are introduced to areas such as data science, computer vision and natural language processing, while also learning about AI bias and responsible technology use.

CBSE is also offering Artificial Intelligence as a skill subject in Class 9 and Artificial Intelligence and Data Science as skill subjects for Classes 10 and 12. This gives students the opportunity to move from basic AI awareness to more specialised learning as they progress through school.

CBSE’s curriculum introduces students to the AI project lifecycle, including defining a problem, collecting data, testing AI tools, and reflecting on and improving solutions. Students in higher classes can also explore real-world applications of AI in areas such as healthcare, education, environment and automation.

What ICSE Is Doing

The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) has introduced Robotics and Artificial Intelligence at both class 10 and 12 curriculum. The subject combines foundational theory with practical learning and is designed to develop students’ understanding of how robotics and AI are being used across areas such as healthcare, education, finance, governance and scientific research.

CISCE says the subject is intended to help students build readiness for emerging careers and develop both theoretical and practical skills.

Govt’s Free AI Courses

The wider government approach is also focused on building future-ready skills among school students. The Ministry of Education has taken a significant step to prepare students for the future by launching AI courses on the SWAYAM portal at swayam.gov.in. They have made five AI courses available absolutely free of cost including Python and Analytics with AI. These AI courses are beneficial for everyone, from school and college students to professionals. Notably, these courses have been designed by professors from the country’s top IITs.

For students, preparing for an AI-driven career is therefore not limited to learning how to code. A school project, coding exercise, robotics activity or AI course can become an early step towards a future career. As AI continues to transform different professions, students who learn to adapt, question and use technology responsibly will be better positioned for the changing world of work.
