British actor Sir Patrick Stewart, best known for his roles in ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation‘ and the ‘X-Men‘ film franchise, has died at the age of 86, according to a statement shared on his official X account on Thursday.

The statement said Stewart died at his home in Los Angeles on Wednesday, with his wife, Sunny, by his side.

“We announce with great sorrow the passing of Sir Patrick Stewart yesterday at his home in Los Angeles, in the loving care of his beloved wife Sunny, following a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia,” the statement said.

It added that he spent his final hours surrounded by family and friends, with “live music, prayer, tears, laughter” and deep emotion.

From Shakespearean Theatre To Hollywood

Born in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, Stewart built a career spanning six decades across theatre, television, film and Broadway. Before becoming a household name in Hollywood, he established himself as a respected stage actor through his work with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

His commanding screen presence and distinctive, deep voice helped him take on some of science fiction and superhero cinema’s most recognisable roles.

Stewart became widely known as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation‘, leading the crew of the USS Enterprise. He later reached a new generation of film audiences as Professor Charles Xavier, the leader of the ‘X-Men‘, appearing in several films in the franchise and related Marvel productions.

A Legacy Beyond Acting

The statement praised Stewart’s ability to portray a wide range of human experiences, saying his voice and talent would remain associated with “indelible performances in every genre”.

It added that he brought hope to audiences through both the Marvel universe and the world of Star Trek.

Beyond acting, Stewart supported human rights, survivors of domestic violence, refugees, veterans’ mental health services and animal welfare. He was also known for his work with foster dogs.

The statement said his professional achievements were matched by his philanthropy and activism, adding that he would be remembered for the “dignity, compassion and humanity” he brought to his work and personal life.

Stewart was knighted for his services to drama and remained closely connected to his Yorkshire roots throughout his international career.
