Mumbai is bracing itself for a potentially wet and disruptive week ahead. Weather forecasts indicate a low-pressure system is likely to form near the Konkan coast and the Arabian Sea by May 22, bringing widespread and intense rainfall to the city and surrounding areas.

According to IMD, a cyclonic circulation is likely to form off the Konkan coast within the next 24 hours.

A separate weather system is currently over the Bay of Bengal, near South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and North Tamil Nadu. This system is expected to move inland within the next 36 hours. As it interacts with the weather patterns over the Arabian Sea, conditions will become favorable for a low-pressure area to form, leading to intensified rainfall along Maharashtra’s coastal regions.

IMD has also issued an Orange alert for Thane, Pune, Nasik, Raigad, and Latur Districts. A yellow alert has been issued for Mumbai. Red alert has been issued for Ahmednagar, Solapur and Osmanabad districts on the possibility of moderate thunderstorms with an intense spell of rain.

Mumbai is expected to witness light showers beginning Monday, May 19, with rainfall gradually increasing in intensity through the week.

On May 20, moderate and scattered rain is likely to continue. However, it is midweek — particularly May 22 and 23 — when the city could be lashed by heavy rainfall. The rainfall could be intense enough to cross the three-digit mark in 24 hours, the weather agency added.

On May 20, moderate and scattered rain is likely to continue, with temperatures ranging from 26°C to 32°C. On May 22, heavy rainfall is expected, with the possibility of intense downpours that could lead to significant accumulation.

On May 23, the heavy rainfall is expected to persist, potentially leading to disruptions in the city.

This round of showers will mark Mumbai’s first major rainfall event of 2025. It could lead to waterlogging and flooding in low-lying areas.
