Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday lamented that quality health and education, which were once considered as a service to society, are now heavily commercialised and beyond the reach of the common people.
“Good health and education are extremely important and were earlier considered as ‘seva’ (service), but now both are beyond the reach of common people, both have been commercialised. They are neither affordable nor accessible,” he said at an event in Indore.
He emphasised that people often sacrificed their savings and belongings for quality healthcare. “The number of schools and hospitals is rising, and there is progress in facilities, but these facilities are not accessible to people.”

Bhagwat further stressed the need for affordable and accessible healthcare, saying that good cancer care was available in only 8-10 Indian cities. He also said that while the West applies uniform healthcare standards across the world, Indian medicine treats patients as per individual needs.
On Saturday, Bhagwat addressed an event during a temple visit in Maharashtra’s Nagpur visit, saying India would truly be a “vishwaguru” when it develops religion and spirituality.
“Even if our nation becomes a 3 trillion dollar economy, it would be nothing new in the world, as there are several other such countries, ” he said. “However, the world lacks the spirituality and religion that we possess. The world comes to us for it. When we become bigger in it (religion and spirituality), then the world bows down in front of us and considers us as the Vishwaguru.”
“We must become like Lord Shiva, who is brave and looks at everyone equally… He becomes happy in little and solves the problems of the world,” he added.
On Wednesday, the RSS chief said that dharma is the truth and a sacred duty, and following it with responsibility helps maintain peace in society. He emphasised that it is society’s responsibility to ensure people do not stray from the path of dharma.
