The government has cut export levies on petrol, diesel and aviation turbine fuel (ATF) for the next fortnight, with the revised rates taking effect from September 16.

According to notifications issued by the Finance Ministry late Wednesday, the levy on petrol has been reduced by Rs 1 per litre, while the duty on diesel has been cut by Rs 5 per litre. The levy on ATF has been lowered by Rs 4 per litre.

New Export Levies From Sept 16

Under the revised rates, the export levy on petrol will fall to Rs 0.50 per litre from Rs 1.50 per litre.

The total levy on diesel has been reduced to Rs 20 per litre from Rs 25 per litre. The diesel levy includes Special Additional Excise Duty (SAED), which has been cut to Rs 20 per litre from Rs 24 per litre. The Rs 1 per litre Road and Infrastructure Cess (RIC) has been withdrawn.

For ATF, the export levy has been reduced to Rs 15 per litre from Rs 19 per litre.

The latest changes follow the previous revision that came into effect on September 1, when the government had raised the levies on some petroleum products.

Levies Reviewed Every Fortnight

The export levies were introduced on March 27, 2026, as the government sought to discourage exports and maintain adequate domestic supplies amid the West Asia crisis.

The rates are reviewed every two weeks based on average international prices of crude oil, petrol, diesel and ATF.

The latest reduction therefore applies for the next fortnight, with the government set to review the rates again based on prevailing global prices.

Importantly, there has been no change in the excise duty rates on petrol and diesel meant for domestic consumption.

The latest move relates specifically to export levies and does not directly alter the existing domestic excise duty structure on petrol and diesel.
