Eighteen‑year‑old Udkarsh Yadav, a civil engineering student at Northumbria University, has been sentenced after admitting he broke into a female undergraduate’s room and performed an indecent act on her personal belongings.
Yadav allegedly broke into the fellow student’s room and masturbated on her bed cover and soft toys.
The incident took place last year during the Christmas holiday when the female student had returned home. Yadav gained unauthorised access to her room using a gym keycard that had been incorrectly configured to grant access to all rooms in the student accommodation.
He entered the victim’s room, which was empty at the time, and ejaculated on her duvet cover and three Jellycat teddy bears. When she returned in early January, she discovered a crusted white substance on her bed and toys, Express reported.
After admitting to the offence, Udkarsh Yadav received a 14-month prison sentence, suspended for two years. This means he will not serve time in prison unless he commits another offence within the next two years. In addition to the suspended sentence, Yadav was ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid community service and attend rehabilitation programmes. He was also required to pay £117 in compensation for the damaged items.
Following his conviction, Northumbria University swiftly corrected the keycard error and moved Yadav to different housing. The university has also indicated it may consider expelling him from his civil engineering course, and he now faces the possibility of being sent back to India if his student visa is revoked.
A spokesperson for Northumbria University stated, “We were made aware of an administrative error resulting in access to unauthorised areas in one of our partner-managed student accommodation buildings. Immediate action was taken to ensure the issue was resolved. The University has been assured by its accommodation provider that more stringent controls are now in place.”
