Construction of the International Cricket Stadium in Gorakhpur has gathered pace, with around 6.73 per cent of the project completed since work began following the foundation stone laying ceremony in May, according to Uttar Pradesh government officials.
The stadium, being built at an estimated cost of Rs 392.94 crore, is expected to be completed by December 2027 and will have a seating capacity of 30,000 spectators.
Officials said the project is being developed over nearly 46 acres and is intended to strengthen sports infrastructure in eastern Uttar Pradesh. Earth-filling work has been completed, while piling work is currently underway.
According to the Sports Directorate, construction is progressing as scheduled. The state government has approved Rs 63.39 crore as the first instalment for the project, while the Ministry of Petroleum has agreed to contribute Rs 100 crore through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fund.
The stadium complex is being developed with facilities designed to meet international standards for both players and spectators. The structure will be built on a ground-plus-two-floor model.
Plans for the venue include seven main playing pitches and four practice pitches. Four international-standard high-mast floodlights will also be installed, enabling the stadium to host day-night matches.
Officials said the facility is expected to create opportunities for athletes from Gorakhpur and neighbouring districts while helping the region host national and international sporting events.
Sports Secretary Suhas L.Y. said Uttar Pradesh is emerging as a major centre for cricket infrastructure development. He noted that the international cricket stadium in Varanasi is nearing completion, while a stadium in Ayodhya has already been completed. He also highlighted that Indian Premier League matches are being hosted at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow.
Sports Director R.P. Singh said the Gorakhpur stadium would strengthen sports development in Purvanchal and reduce the need for local players to move to larger cities in search of better facilities and opportunities.
Officials said the project is expected to boost sports infrastructure in the region and provide a platform for nurturing cricketing talent in eastern Uttar Pradesh.
