Question: The character of Birju Lohar has become so popular among the audience. Did you think this character would leave such an impact?

Answer/Mohit Malik: To be honest, I had not thought like this, but I definitely tried my best. I knew that amidst such a big cast and important characters, my screen time was very less. Therefore, it was important for me that whenever I come on screen, Birju’s five-year journey should be visible. I think the audience connects with emotions very quickly.

I worked hard for this character and gave my life. In the end, some special moments of the film connect in the right way and a beautiful story is formed. I think the same happened with Birju also.

Question: The last scene of the film is very touching. What was the environment of the set like during the shooting of that scene?

Answer/Rasika Duggal: In my experience, it often happens that the scene which is later considered to be the most important or most talked about scene of the film, has a lot of chaos on the set on the day of shooting. Same thing happened that day also. Our shift time had advanced considerably. Some were hungry, some had to go home and there was less time left for shooting.

In such an environment, it is difficult for an actor to remain calm and understand that he will not get this opportunity again. You have to collect your thoughts amidst all that noise and try to live that moment with complete honesty. We had the same challenge in this scene also.

Mohit Malik: At that time we had no idea that this scene would become so special. As Rasika said, there was a lot going on at that time. But later when singing, acting and other things came together, the scene became very beautiful.

Question: The song in this scene also has a lot of emotional impact. When did you hear this song for the first time?

Answer/Rasika Duggal: We heard this song for the first time at the screening of the film. We had seen the scene before, but it did not include singing. I think this song made that whole moment more powerful. This song takes that scene to a poetic level. Madhur has sung it very beautifully and like every line written by Puneet ji, it too has a lot of depth. The song has further strengthened the emotions of the scene.

Mohit Malik: Absolutely. Madhur has sung very well. That song gave a different feel to the scene. Question: What was the biggest challenge for you while playing the character of Birju? Mohit Malik: The biggest challenge for me was to show the entire journey of the character even in less screen time. I was working among such actors whose characters are already very popular among the audience.

Ravi Kishan ji himself is a big star and has his own influence. In such a situation, I came into that world with a new character. I had to prove that Birju has his own identity and his story should reach the audience. I am grateful that the entire team loved me and made me feel included. Everyone cooperated, which made this experience good for me.

Question: Rasika, Bina Tripathi’s character comes out with a new layer every time. Do you also feel something new while understanding it?

Answer/Rasika Duggal: Absolutely. I feel the same way about Bina. As soon as I think I have started understanding it, Puneet ji writes something that makes me think, how did this happen? Bina’s character is very complex. She lives in a patriarchal society, where as soon as she makes her place, someone or the other pushes her back. Then she takes her place again.

This process is what makes his character interesting. He is both weak and strategic. He is emotional and also very smart. There are many layers in him and this is what makes him different from other characters.

Question: The audience has now started understanding Bina more than before. Do you think so too?

Answer/Rasika Duggal: Yes, but just when it seems the audience is beginning to understand it, something new comes to the fore in the story. I think this is the biggest feature of Bina. People often tell me that they have never seen such a woman on screen before. The way she understands situations and moves forward in her own way is very different.

I also think that she can adapt herself to every situation. She knows her weaknesses, but also understands how to use them.

Question: Which quality of Beena would you like in your real life?

Answer/Rasika Duggal: Bina’s quality is that she knows how to use other people for her benefit. I can’t do this at all in real life. I wish I could have as much control over the circumstances as Beena does.

Question: What is there about Beena, for which you would say that it is good, but it is not there in me?

Answer/Rasika Duggal: His ability to kill people. I want my performance to be ‘killer’, but I should not have the nature to kill anyone.

Question: Mohit, how much part of Birju is present in your real life?

Answer/Mohit Malik: I think around 80 to 90 percent of Birju is in me. Especially in matters of love. I also take emotions very seriously and find myself very close to Birju in this matter.

Question: The audience is seeing similarities between your character Birju and old TV character Samrat Singh. How do you see this comparison?

Answer/Mohit Malik: I played the character of Samrat Singh in one of my TV shows, who was somewhat like Munna Bhaiya. So I am happy that the audience and fan club of my old TV shows has become active again. I have seen that people who liked those characters are now watching Birju also. This is a good thing for me. I am happy that after so many years, the audience associated with my old work is connecting again and is giving love to this character too.

Question: How did both of you feel about the response the film received from the audience?

Answer/Rasika Duggal: This time I was a little nervous. Usually when I work on a project, I only concentrate on my work during the shooting. I don’t think how the audience will accept it. But in the case of ‘Mirzapur’ the feeling of responsibility was different. Our fans have been following us very loyally for the last eight-nine years. They come to know many things related to the project before us.

I was worried whether we would be able to make them happy? Will they come to the theater to watch the movie? Watching a movie sitting at home on OTT is a different experience, whereas it takes time and effort for the audience to go to the theatre. Now when people are coming to watch the film and bringing their friends along, I am very happy. This has further increased our fan base.

Mohit Malik: I think the fans of ‘Mirzapur’ are going to watch the film. But when they like the film, they ask other people to watch it too. In the calls I get, people say that we are fans of ‘Mirzapur’, but the film is so well made that we want everyone to watch it. This word of mouth is taking the film forward.

Seeing the reaction of the audience in the theatre, Rasika Duggal told how special that moment was for an artiste.

Question: Both of you also went to watch the film among the audience. How was the experience there?

Answer/Rasika Duggal: We formed a group of ‘Women of Mirzapur’ and went to watch the film. When I was going inside the theatre, that scene was about to come in which the audience realizes something special about Bina. Just two-three seconds before the scene, I heard the collective reaction of the audience. Suddenly the entire theater became silent. When that important line came, people applauded.

It was a great pleasure to sit among the audience and see such reactions. It is a great feeling for an artiste that the moment he played reaches the audience with the same emotion.

Mohit Malik: The way Rasika has spoken that line and the emotions behind it are very impressive. Not just the words, but the entire feeling behind those words is important. When I saw that scene on the screen, I also felt very happy.

Question: How was the coordination between you two during the shooting of that important scene?

Answer/Mohit Malik: That was my first day of shooting for the film and that was the scene. Although we had met before, that day we were shooting together for the first time. It was important to me that we could act looking into each other’s eyes. Many times the camera is placed in such a way that it becomes difficult for the co-actor to see the person in front. But it was necessary in this scene.

The camera team cooperated and changed the camera position so that we could see each other. This allowed the emotions in the scene to come out naturally.

Rasika Duggal: Many times the camera is placed in such a place that it is difficult for the co-actor to see the person in front. But in this scene it was necessary to look into each other’s eyes. The camera team understood our needs and adjusted things. This gave us the opportunity to act naturally with each other rather than following a set mark. This is very important in such emotional scenes.
